Figures from an Indian Chess Set

Artist unknown; 19th century (?)
2" x 2"
Painted wood
Private Collection, New York City
These small figures are part of a painted wooden chess set. When such chess sets (and those carved in ivory as well) need conservation or restoration, their treatment has many similarities to the treatment of a painting.

1. During treatment. Losses in the ground layer were compensated with new chalk and glue fillings.

2. After treatment. New fillings have been retouched and a thin layer of varnish has been applied to match the sheen of surrounding areas.
