Chess figures restoration

These small figures are part of a painted wooden chess set. When such chess sets (and those carved in ivory as well) need conservation or restoration, their treatment has many similarities to the treatment of a painting.

    • During treatment

Losses in the ground layer were compensated with new chalk and glue fillings.

    • After treatment

New fillings have been retouched and a thin layer of varnish has been applied to match the sheen of surrounding areas.
